The change in John puzzled Travis. But he reasoned that John had simply developed a new obsession. One evening, John appeared at Travis' door. He was in a very excited state of mind, and insisted Travis meet Iris. Reluctantly, Travis took the bus with John to the Yale campus. Through the window of a popular diner, John pointed to a young woman seated at a booth. As Travis made for the entrance, John grabbed his sleeve and begged him not to go inside. Panicked, John bolted into the night, leaving Travis alone on the street. The following day Travis found a note on his bed. Beside it was a copy of John's manifesto.
