Despite the warnings of Dr. Dowling, George and Mary Frances adopted a second child, Christina. She was a fragile girl. Her biological mother drank, causing her to be born with rickets. Her first year of life was spent in leg braces. Due to her weak condition, Travis and Christina could not enjoy the typical rough-house games that siblings play. They would often sit quietly together and watch television or play with paper cut-outs. Travis was certain that Christina was not receiving messages from the television or playing with mother in Dreamland. This he concluded by observing her communication with Mary Frances and comparing it to his own.
