Travis rode a Greyhound to
LA. and
retreated to the lounge with "The Moviegoer," a book he
had stolen from Jim Jones. A well-dressed man next to him noted the title and began chatting to Travis about movies.
He introduced himself as David Thomson and invited Travis to a rare screening of one of his favorite films. Over coffee after the screening, David spoke rapturously about the director's humane intelligence and yoga-like gravity. Travis said he liked the words at the bottom of the screen. David realized that Travis had never seen a subtitled film before and motioned for the check. After an uncomfortable silence, David excused himself to the restroom. Travis quickly fished David's car keys from his overcoat, and in five minutes he was speeding down the freeway in his new Mustang convertible. |
