Jerry was surprised that anyone had taken his work seriously enough to make such a journey. The party leader was wheelchair bound and possibly insane. His eyes moved independently, like a lizard that Travis had seen on television. For the first few days, the two sat quietly in Jerry's dark apartment in the Castro. One evening a knock on the door interrupted the silence. It was an old friend of Jerry's, Jim Jones. Jim invited Travis to visit his office. In the dark and clutter Jim talked for hours. Travis tried to follow the onslaught of words, but became lost in Jim's ideas. Later that night, Jim drove Travis back to Jerry's and advised him to listen for a message from the television. That night, while Jerry was asleep, Travis left the apartment with $550 and a revolver that he had discovered hidden in the freezer.
