When Travis entered school, his teachers agreed that he was in need of psychological counseling, and referred him to Dr. Edward Emmert, a Child Psychiatrist. Travis met Dr. Emmert weekly. He initially enjoyed the attention he received in the form of the Doctor's questioning. But after a period of several weeks, he began to perceive the Doctor as his enemy. Someone who might want to do harm to Christina. In spite of Travis' hostility, Dr. Emmert looked forward to their sessions. In Travis, he saw a boy who, given the right guidance, could do wonderful things with his life. However, he was forced to conclude that Travis did not have the support needed to function properly in a complex, modern society.
